Losing a tooth rarely feels like a big deal at first. You adjust how you chew, maybe smile a little more carefully, and life goes on. But over months and years, that single gap quietly changes your bite, your jawbone, and your confidence. For patients across Gainesville and Gainesville County, dental implants have become the most reliable way to stop that process and restore a tooth that looks and works like the original.

At Comprehensive Dental Care, Dr. Andrew Martin plans and places implants right here in our Newberry Road office, so you don’t have to coordinate between multiple specialists. Here’s what every patient should know before deciding on implant treatment.

How a Dental Implant Works

Think of an implant as a replacement for the whole tooth, not just the part you can see. Each implant is made up of three pieces:

  • The post: a small titanium fixture that sits in your jawbone and takes the place of the natural root.
  • The abutment: the connecting piece that links the post to your new tooth.
  • The restoration: a custom crown, bridge, or denture designed to blend in with your natural smile.

After the post is placed, your bone gradually grows around and bonds to it. This fusion, called osseointegration, is what gives implants their remarkable strength. Once healed, an implant doesn’t shift, click, or come out.

The Hidden Cost of Leaving a Gap

What happens under the surface when a tooth is missing is easy to overlook. Your jawbone depends on pressure from tooth roots to stay dense. Without that pressure, the bone begins to resorb, or shrink. Meanwhile, the teeth on either side of the gap slowly tip toward it, and the tooth above or below can drift into the empty space. Over time, this can lead to bite problems, food traps that are hard to clean, and extra wear on the teeth doing the work.

Because implants replace the root, they keep stimulating the bone, which is something bridges and traditional dentures can’t do.

Comparing Your Tooth Replacement Options

Single implants replace one tooth without altering the healthy teeth next to it. They’re usually the most conservative long-term choice.

Implant bridges use two or more implants to support a row of replacement teeth, which is ideal when several teeth in a row are missing.

Implant-supported dentures secure a full arch of teeth to a handful of implants. Patients who’ve struggled with loose dentures often describe this as the upgrade they wish they’d made years earlier.

Traditional bridges and dentures still have their place and can be excellent choices depending on your health, goals, and budget. Dr. Martin will lay out every realistic option so you can compare them side by side.

Precision Planning with 3D Imaging

Successful implants start long before placement day. Our office uses CBCT 3D imaging to see your jawbone, nerves, and sinuses in three dimensions. That lets Dr. Martin measure bone volume, choose the ideal implant size and angle, and spot potential issues ahead of time. For patients, better planning means a more predictable procedure and fewer surprises during recovery.

Who Makes a Good Implant Candidate?

Most adults missing one or more teeth are candidates. Ideally, you’ll have healthy gums, enough bone to anchor the implant, and general health that allows normal healing. If your 3D scan shows you’ve lost some bone, grafting can often rebuild the area first. Smoking and poorly controlled diabetes can slow healing, so we’ll talk honestly about how those factors affect your plan rather than making promises we can’t keep.

What the Implant Journey Looks Like

  1. Consultation: We review your health history, examine your mouth, take 3D images, and discuss what you want your smile to look and feel like.
  2. Your custom plan: You’ll receive a written treatment plan with timing and costs before any work begins.
  3. Placement: Dr. Martin places the implant with the area thoroughly numbed. Many patients are back to their normal routine within a day or two.
  4. Healing period: Over the following months, the bone bonds to the implant. A temporary replacement tooth can keep your smile complete in the meantime.
  5. Your new tooth: Once the implant is stable, we attach your final restoration, matched to your surrounding teeth.

Keeping Your Implant Healthy for Life

An implant can’t decay, but the gum tissue around it can still become inflamed if plaque builds up. Daily brushing, flossing or water flossing, and regular professional cleanings are what keep implants healthy for decades. If you clench or grind at night, a custom night guard adds valuable protection.

Investment and Financing

Implant costs vary with the number of teeth involved, whether grafting is needed, and the type of restoration. You’ll get a clear estimate at your consultation. To help spread out the cost, we offer financing through CareCredit and Sunbit for qualified patients, and members of our in-house membership plan receive reduced fees on treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Implants

Do I need to see a specialist for implants?

No. Dr. Martin places implants and creates the final restorations in our Gainesville office, so your care stays under one roof.

Is implant surgery painful?

The area is completely numbed during placement. Afterward, most patients have mild soreness that’s manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers.

How long will my implant last?

With good care, the implant post can last a lifetime. The crown may eventually need replacement after many years of normal wear.

Can implants replace all of my teeth?

Yes. Implant-supported dentures can restore a full upper or lower arch using just a few strategically placed implants.
