What is Orthodontics?
Orthodontics is the term used for treating the alignment and placement of teeth. The American Academy of Orthodontics (AAO) describes orthodontia as an area of dentistry that prevents, diagnoses and treats dental and facial irregularities.
Dr. Martin of Comprehensive Dental Care is well-versed in this area of dentistry and is committed to providing the best option for your needs. Before an orthodontic treatment, Dr. Martin will examine the current bite of the teeth, alignment of the jaw, and any protruding teeth.
If you are considering orthodontic treatment but are nervous about the idea of braces, we have several different options:
- Clear Orthodontic Aligners – Clear orthodontic aligners consist of a series of clear, removable trays that fit over the teeth to align them. They are worn for anywhere up to 20 hours a day and it can take varying times to correct the problems. Times can vary typically between six to eighteen months. One of the benefits of clear orthodontic aligners is that patients can take out the aligners to brush and floss their teeth. Also, much of the discomfort associated with traditional braces is minimized.
- Invisible Braces – Invisible braces work similar to metal braces. The brackets are typically made of ceramic and blend in with the color of the teeth. A metal wire connects the brackets together to align the teeth, and then the wire is adjusted every few weeks.
